Collegiate Church of Santa Maria Assunta

The Collegiate Church of Santa Maria Assunta is the main catholic worship place of Poggibonsi.
Anciently it was a church with three naves and an apse with a cript but, over times, the building became very dangerous and unstable. In 1787 a first restauration was tempted, which was nullified by the 1806’s earthquake.
The restoration of the church was achieved, but in 1863 the building was damaged again and it
was decided to demolish it with a following reconstruction in a neoclassical style. In 1893 the clock was installed in the bell tower, clock that it’s present nowadays and, between 2003 and 2012, interior restorations were carried on to introduce the presbytery area with its current shapes.
