Staggia

The “Festina of Staggia” is the religious celebration of Virgin Mary that takes place in Staggia Senese the third Sunday of June, with a bike race and fireworks.
An epigraph inside the chapel explains the reason for the name Festina: “... The Feast of the Image of the Conception, commonly known as the Festina of the youngsters, began in the year 1830 and was celebrated until 1833 at the Tabernacle of the Marri family at the ancient Florentine gate”.
At the beginning of the 20th century, the Festina was celebrated with the annual horse race, owned by the numerous braids of Staggia, which were left free along the main road of the town and reached the tabernacle of the Marri family at the fortress. The owner of the winning horse was given the prize, which for the whole race was waved hanging from a window in Piazza Grazzini. The horse race or palium, was so called because the winner received a cloth, or palium, as a prize. Today the Youngsters’ Day is no longer celebrated, but the cult of the Sacred Image kept on the altar of the chapel remains. From the religious festivity, the traditional procession through the streets of the town of the statue of the Madonnina is preserved, enriched by the presence of stalls selling sweets and food.
